We had some interesting birds around 7 AM on Aug 12. Most interesting was an apparently young male Western Tanager.

A female Western Tanager came as well, to watch over the youngster. We've been seeing a male Western Tanager fairly regularly all summer, so we infer that there must have been a nest nearby. A Black-headed Grosbeak and several baby Robins were drawn to the water, to bathe and to drink. The pond with its fallling water is a big attraction for the birds.

We had Cedar Waxwings in the apple tree in March and several visits by Cooper's Hawks, one of them a successful catch followed by lunch on the back fence. Red Crossbills in Nov were new on our yard list.

Another new happening for us this year was a bunch of hummingbird moths. They were quite numerous for awhile. It's unlikely that we would have failed to spot them in previous years. The woodpeckers and robins are frequent visitors.

Robins flock to the heated birdbath in January here, and perhaps 9 or 10 more waiting in the apple tree.
